Interpretation As Books Benediction (Plainsong #3)

When Dad Lewis is diagnosed with terminal cancer, he and his wife must work together, along with their daughter, to make his final days as comfortable as possible, despite the bitter absence of their estranged son. Next door, a young girl moves in with her grandmother and contends with the memories that Dad’s condition stirs up of her own mother’s death. A newly arrived preacher attempts to mend his strained relationships with his wife and son, and soon faces the disdain of his congregation when he offers more than they are used to getting on Sunday mornings. And throughout, an elderly widow and her middle-aged daughter do all they can to ease the pain of their friends and neighbors.

The EndBenediction is a lovely story beautifully written. The theme is reminiscent of Marilynne Robinson. The Christian message transcends a niche and expands into something universal. Haruf creates an ideal template for living yet he shows the people who try and live it complete with their warts intact. He tackles a lot of issues in 250 pages. The central theme is loss. At the books heart is Dad Lewis whos just found out he has a fatal disease. He tackles death as it approaches and naturally

Life and death. Simply and beautifully penned. May you rest in peace, Mr. Haruf. We've loved your stories well. The wind still blows. That doesn't change.

Benediction - the utterance or bestowing of a blessing at the end of a service, or in this case a life. For we are told immediately that Dad Lewis has cancer and will soon die, and what we get after that revelation is exactly what he gets, a chance to review his life, to see where he went wrong and right; and to see what he leaves behind him, the life that will still move forward when he is gone.Kent Haruf is such an amazing writer! He can get inside the minds and hearts of his characters in
