Interpretation In Pursuance Of Books Exterminate All the Brutes: One Man's Odyssey into the Heart of Darkness and the Origins of European Genocide

"Exterminate All the Brutes" is a searching examination of Europe's dark history in Africa and the origins of genocide. Using Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness as his point of departure, Sven Lindqvist takes us on a haunting tour through the colonial past, interwoven with a modern-day travelogue. Retracing the steps of European explorers, missionaries, politicians, and historians in Africa from the late eighteenth century onward, the author exposes the roots of genocide in Africa via his own journey through the Saharan desert. As Lindqvist shows, fantasies not merely of white superiority but of actual extermination--"cleansing" the earth of the so-called lesser races--deeply informed European colonialism and racist ideology that ultimately culminated in Europe's own Holocaust.

Chosen as one of the Best Books of 1998 by the New Internationalist, which called it "a beautifully written integration of criticism, cultural history, and travel writing, underpinned by a passion for social justice," "Exterminate All the Brutes" is a powerful reckoning with the past and an indispensable contribution to the literature of colonial Africa and European genocide.

The book's central argument:"Auschwitz was the modern industrial application of a policy of extermination on which European world domination had long since rested." (160)A prophetic passage (note that the book was written in 1992):"It is coming... The same roar after every sentence when the leader speaks. The same hatred of aliens. The same preparedness for violence. The same wounded manhood... Unemployment rates of 5, 10, 15, or 20 percent give the employer a wonderful upper hand. The workforce

A magically woven philippic against the imperial genocide in Africa, under European colonialism. This is a book which is short in length but by all accounts massive in power and depth. In less than 200 pages, the author manages to render a haunting subject matter that is often conveniently ignored and forgotten, into an indelible piece of elucidation. It is not knowledge we lack. What is missing is the courage to understand what we know and to draw conclusions.A thoroughly critical read that needs

"Auschwitz was the modern industrial application of a policy of extermination on which European world domination had long since rested."This book brilliantly traces the roots of ethnic cleansing in the colonial and imperial policies of Europe and the United States through a compelling use of primary sources. The rich understanding that results is of a continuous progress of policies and attitudes that undermines an ahistorical view of genocide that seems to pop into the modern mind from nowhere.

A poignant, humanist survey of the genocidal aggravations of imperialists - who e.g. brought about the systematic annihilation of Tasmanians and Indians, and the decimation of entire peoples in Africa. Lindqvist exhibits the grotesque cruelty meted out to natives by military personnel and businessmen-robber barons, who remained invisible to the genteel society which celebrated the captured riches and the spread of 'civilisation'. He notes that this happened in the intellectual backdrop of pre-

Item two. This one's difficult to blurb. The official version:"'Exterminate All the Brutes'" is a unique study of Europe's history in Africa, written in the form of a travel diary... traces the legacy of European explorers, missionaries, politicians, and historians in Africa from the late eighteenth century onward. Lindqvist also [oh, yeah... also...] examines the roots of European genocide, setting Conrad's 'Heart of Darkness' is context and helping us to understand the most terrifying...

This has a lot more going for it than Heart of Darkness does, but they share the same central problem: elevating the voices of white people over the voices of the actual victims and survivors of colonialism. Lindqvist will quote European racists obscure and famous to trace the ideology of white supremacy, but the much more interesting story of his trip through northern Africa is put on the back-burner. We hear little about his surroundings, and almost nothing about the actual people he talks to.

Part travelogue, part history, part literary criticism; with kaleidoscopic vision Lindqvist somehow manages to paint a clear picture of the root and expanse of genocidal European colonialism. The book's backbone is Joseph Conrad's "Heart of Darkness", which Lindqvist uses as a sort of channel to sail his way back to the root of European genocide. He adds layers of nuance by examining the relationship between Darwin's social theories and European expansion, justifications for racism, and riveting
