Masters of Rome (Vespasian #5)
Vespasian must strive to save his brother whilst completing the conquest of the south-west of the haunted isle, before he is drawn inexorably back to Rome and the heart of Imperial politics. Claudius' three freedmen remain at the locus of power. As Messalina's time as Empress comes to a bloody end, the three freedmen each back a different mistress. But which woman will be victorious? And at what price for Vespasian?
This book is hard to judge because it's basically copsoed of two parts. One is Vespasian serving in Britannia and other one is him returning to Rome.First one is pretty awful. If so far Fabbri managed to keep fantasy aspects pretty much out of his work (rebirth of Phoenix notwithstanding) this one features it prominently. Druids have real power, demons walk the earth, praying to christian God, Mars and Mithra works and so on. Plus whole plot of Sabinus being captured just doesn't line well with
Masters of Rome has been another good book in the Vespasian series. Although Vespasian suffered at the hands of the Druids in Britannia, as usual he managed to outwit them although the reader realised that somewhere inside he was frightened of them and what they could do. I know little about the Druids, but if they dressed and behaved like they did in this book, I would have been very scared too. But Vespasian could not show fear and he escaped from them just at the right time and returned to

The development of Vespasian is astounding. He now has matured necessarily from a not all that callow youth into a ruthless career politician prepared to make sacrifices of much of what earlier he would have considered his innate morality to ensure not only his advancement but his survival. Yet he remains curiously likable.
5th book in the series about the life of Vespasian, and more broadly about the Roman empire during the reign of the Julio-Claudian emperors. The first half continues the conquest of Britannia, the second half describes the political intrigues around the court of Claudius. What a great writer Fabbri has become. I particularly liked the intrigues in Rome; they're intricate, exciting to follow, and mostly historic. This series should be made into a TV series.
Oh damn. I just realised when adding this that it's book 5 when I thought i was a one off.I love it though and the best part is I love the narrator. He is awesome with voices and you will be familiar with another book series he does "The Witcher"

Britannia, 45 AD: Vespasian's brother, Sabinus, is captured by druids. The druids want to offer a potent sacrifice to their gods - not just one Roman Legate, but two. They know that Vespasian will come after his brother and they plan to sacrifice the siblings on mid-summer's day. But to whom will they be making this sacrifice? What were the gods of this land before the Celts came? Only the druids still hold the secret and it is one of pure malevolence.Vespasian must strive to save his brother whilst completing the conquest of the south-west of the haunted isle, before he is drawn inexorably back to Rome and the heart of Imperial politics. Claudius' three freedmen remain at the locus of power. As Messalina's time as Empress comes to a bloody end, the three freedmen each back a different mistress. But which woman will be victorious?
