Duras' The Lover is the first and superior book of the same material. The North China Lover, now in the third person rather than the first, refers to the couple only as "the child" and "the Chinese." At first this is disturbing due to the constant reminder that we are with a child, but as the book continues the word becomes immaterial and descriptions of her pre-pubescent body become the jarring element (though I question Duras' memory here: the character is 14 and turns 15 during the book;
