Crit Regarding Books Superman: The Man of Steel, Vol. 1 (Superman: The Man of Steel Trade Paperbacks #1)

This book to me is the iconic Superman story. Byrne's artwork has never looked better, and some of his Superman splash pages are as good as I ever ever seen Supes drawn. Lex and Lois are pitch-perfect, too. This run is the true beginning of the Lois that I adore, the modern Lois Lane who is one of my favorite characters in all of comics. Also, I thought the trades did a wonderful job of recoloring the issues.The blue and red absolutely POP. Note: The other two iconic Superman stories for me are:

Man of Steel is an interesting and educational read for sure, but I didnt fall in love with this take on the character. Byrnes origin feels simplistic, cold and sterile, and not really resembling anything Ive grown to know and love about Superman. Its very readable and visually pretty for its time, but as a straight up origin story I still prefer books by Waid, Morrison or Johns over this.

DC did a fine job hiring John Byrne to reinvent their greatest Superhero ever. The Man of Steel is obviously old, and may feel dated to some. But it has got heart and quality that one may not easily find in Superhero comic books nowadays. It is indeed a superhero story and involves action, supervillains, supernemesis, but also it is a story of coming-of-age and exploring oneself. John Byrne has done an impressive job with both the writing and the art by delivering this must read Superman story.

So a lot of people call this the quintessential Superman "origin" story. One book that I see many stories compared too. You know what? I guess it was alright. First off I'll say that for a book that came out in '86 it holds up pretty well. I can see a lot of cool things here that have been carried through Superman's mythos ever since. I can respect the fact that this modernized the character, and the fact that most origin stories after this have taken a few pages from this book. But did it

Years ago, a friend shoved a copy of the collector's edition first issue of this Superman reboot into my hands and said I should make it part of my comic book collection. And while I can clearly recall having the collector's cover issue in my collection for years, I can't recall much about reading it at the time.
